Looks like we’re not the only ones…
on January 24th, 2011 at 1:26 PMLooks like we’re not the only ones who thing that we should raise the gas tax to save some money. Even the Examiner is playing with the idea.
I wish all the people who shouted “Liberal!” at the idea of raising the tax would actual read this article. It makes a lot of good points.
Currently, Virginia’s gas tax rate is 17.5 cents a gallon. Maryland’s is 23.5 cents. In addition, when you look at compared to the rest of the nation, doubling the gas tax wouldn’t be all that high.
California’s gas tax is 47.7 cents per gallon.
New York’s is 47.2 cents per gallon
Hawaii’s is 45.8 cents per gallon
Connecticut’s is 45.2 cents per gallon.
Obviously we don’t even come close.
Even Bob McDonnell acknowledged that with more fuel efficient cars being made, people are using less gas. Just imagine how much money would raise for Virginia if raising the tax by only a penny would bring in $46.8 million a year in new revenue.

California, New York, Hawaii,Connecticut…
Hey, those are all great places to live! Go move there and support their tax hikes.
Check your Patriotism, guns, and self respect at the border though…
I wish KEV would offer something more than useless rhetoric. It would be a nice change.
That being said, I don’t really see how living in one of those states makes someone less of a patriot? I guess all those military members at Pearl Harbor hate America because they live in Hawaii. Or perhaps the 9/11 first responders hate American because they live in New York.
That being said, I donn’t really understand what you’re trying to imply by listing those states.
I listed those states b/c they were the highest in the nation. Full list is in the article. My point was if we doubled the gas tax in VA, or even just raised it by a penny (which the article kinda suggests) we still wouldn’t pay that much compared to the rest of the nation…
Yeah, places like California, New York, and Maryland have higher gas, sales, and income taxes than Virginia. And guess what? THEY ARE GOING BROKE!!! Not only that, they still can’t keep up with their road maintenance, mainly because they misallocate their resources — a lot.
Let’s put our transportation funds in a lock box, do real analysis on the most effective uses of road money, and then we’ll talk.
This blog is completely insane… higher taxes and more gun laws?
It says the Blog belongs to 2 guys and not the Republican Party, but are you two guys politicians?
If so, It would explain a lot, and almost justify oppressive restricitons, and reaching into my pocket to enrich yourselves, and doing the same evil that Democrats do.
If not… well then I would say the Republican Party has a BIG problem right here…
KEV,
Having roads that are not crumbling enriches your life. What don’t you get about that?? It is really that hard to see for you? Do you think people want to live in an area with crap roads? No. That affects property values and thus has a direct link to your back pocket assuming you live in this area. Sure, if you are in Galax it probably won’t affect you directly, but if you live within 20 miles of the beltway it does. Crumbling roads are also a deterrent for companies to move into the area and also affects property values which do affect your quality of life. Everything is connected and pretending they’re not is foolish.
Iso,
A lock box sounds like a great idea to me. Keep the political hands off these funds that have been a political football for far too long.
Critical infrastructure is important. Roads deteriorate and require maintenance. That costs money.
The very simple solution to generate that money is to raise taxes. That’s what Democrats do- Tax and Spend.
I would hope that someone who aspires to become a leader would sponsor a less simple minded, and more inspiring solution. How about taking some money out of the car tax scam and throwing that at the roads… that’s what it’s supposed to be for, right?
Kev,
Administrators only do what politicians tell them. Does Gilmore ring a bell?? I would love to get rid of the car tax or send 100% of the funding to roads, but as the politicians have proven that won’t happen anytime soon. You blame government for doing what the politicians tell it to do. You are attacking the wrong entity here.
Yes, its simple. Since when is simple wrong? I thought that was the whole tea party MO, common sense?? Gas tax hasn’t risen in nearly 30 years, gas tax funds roads, the roads are crumbling because of a lack of revenues, sounds like a pretty common sense problem with a common sense solution. You are griping about paying 10 cents a day,i’d say thats a fair price to pay for dependable roads and interstates.
You’re making excuses.
It’s time to become smaller, leaner, and more efficient. From what I’ve read here, the a Republican in NoVA is a Democrat in most of the United States.
How am I making excuses? You have yet to propose an alternative. Thats what people like you do. they sit on the sidelines and complain/gripe/moan about how everyone is doing everything wrong, yet you never offer a solution of your own. im done arguing with a tree. i wont post another comment directed at you.
