Parked next to me at Popeye’s the other day was a car displaying the bumper sticker pictured below.

This slogan is entirely false.

God gave us the weekends. Religion predates organized labor unions by centuries. The Sabbath used to be a day of no work. Jews picked Saturday then Christians picked Sunday. Shops were closed on the weekend. As the world modernized into an industrial and commercial society the groundwork for the five day work week had already been laid by religion. So first off this bumper sticker slogan is ignorant of history.

By modern day standards the bumper sticker is also inaccurate. Unions “represent” a number of different fields of workers and hospitals, shopping malls, and hotels aren’t closed on the weekends. How many union workers drive that bumper sticker to work on Saturday morning?

When the Ds come up with a catchy slogan, facts need not apply. Oh and Happy Labor Day everyone.
