    White House Correspondents’ Dinner

by Chris Farmer on April 28th, 2013 at 1:30 PM
Posted In: Humor, National politics, The Media

Last night was the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Red NoVA was, once again, not offered an invitation. Conan O’Brien was the host and he did a fine job. The pic below is a link that will take you to C-SPAN’s clip on YouTube of Conan’s part.

    Some of Conan’s highlights:
-”I love the Hilton. I really love the Hilton’s motto; sorry the Radisson was booked.”

-”But I do want to thank the Hilton for accommodating us. They were kind enough to reschedule a cash for gold seminar.”

-“Some people are saying print media is dying but I don’t believe it. And neither does my blacksmith.”

-“CNN’s ratings are so low now when the logo comes up James Earl Jones says, ‘You’re watching CNN?’”

    George W. Bush Library

by Chris Farmer on April 25th, 2013 at 8:00 AM
    Posted In: George W. Bush

The George W. Bush presidential library opens today in Dallas. I do agree with the idea that we must wait ten years after a president leaves office before we can begin to accurately assess his performance, so right now it is still too early for us to reach conclusions on the George W. Bush administration. But with this opening let’s take the opportunity just to reflect a little on Bush’s time in the oval office.

President Bush 43 was a C+ student and president. He had a partisan swagger, Texas style, which drove his opponents up the wall. He was a polarizing figure to the left, but he wasn’t a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. He handed out bailouts and a stimulus package, which was after signing a transportation bill that was larger than Governor McDonnell’s. Right now he is being mislabeled. The left calls him a radical right winger, and the right does not call him conservative. Not many politicians can make that claim.

His most famous quote has to be, unfortunately that is, the following; “We’re going to get those terrorists, now watch this drive.” While the left loves to use that against him, the right sometimes likes to use it too because it is an illustration of that confident swagger Bush had. He was proud to be the president of the greatest country on Earth and he didn’t mind letting people know that, which is probably the thing I miss most about Bush.

Every president can find their legacy over on the Supreme Court. The justices they nominate and usher through confirmation remain on the court long after a president steps away. No more Souters is forever the conservative rallying call. When the time came for Bush to step up to the plate, he hit the ball out of the park both times. Appointing John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court were W’s best moves as president. A few conservatives are a little upset with our Chief Justice right now, but his court has been on the conservative side of major decisions, while always writing a narrow, to the case opinion that does not make broad stokes of new sweeping legal precedent. Chief Justice Roberts will be remembered as one of our finest Chiefs yet. Justice Alito is a great conservative and will continue to impress the right. Alito voted as the lone dissent in a 8-1 regarding something I rather not talk about, but I’ll say it made me a huge fan of Alito. I also appreciate that he had the wherewithal to shake his head a few times when President Obama took an inappropriate shot at the High Court during the State of the Union Address one year. These two conservative jurists will help place Bush in kinder waters with pundits down the road.

Bush 43 had other stellar appointments. Bush was the first president to have a black Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and a black woman Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. Bush and his team filled federal courts with a number of strong conservatives. He stood up for the 2nd and 10th Amendment. Bush also sent more aid to Africa than any other president.

Bush 43 was a wartime president. His first eight months in office were the only peacetime he saw. Then came September 11th, 2001. The world changed that day. Bush and his administration had to begin to change along with it in-order to fight this new clandestine enemy. Two wars followed and the homeland was not attacked again under his watch. In Afghanistan the country was behind the president all the way, then it took too long, then our attention couldn’t last, and support waned. But the Iraq war was never really popular, the president didn’t really lead us into Iraq as a nation. That was probably his ultimate failing; he didn’t unite us under the flag being carried into Iraq by our military. Instead, the war became so unpopular that the American people went on to elect and re-elect a president who apologizes for America, the opposite of the non-apologetic swagger of Bush.

We’ll have to wait a few more years to better understand Bush’s time as president. Right now he looks like he’ll be a C+ kind of middle-tier president. Not the worst and certainly not the best. Bush 43 was a proud, red/white/and blue American president, and that part we could use again.

    House Report on Benghazi

by Taller Than Madison on April 23rd, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Speaker John Boehner released a special report tonight on the 9/11 terrorist attack on our embassy in Benghazi. The report is critical of then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her decisions involving the overall level of security there. The report also identifies the White House as being involved in altering the information to cover their asses. This should be a bigger story.

This really does deserve more attention than it is getting. For some reason the president avoided accountability. How is he getting away with this? Let’s hope this report is the beginning of more investigations that then lead to prosecutions. Ambassador Stevens died in a terrorist attack and the White House played down everything because they were too busy running an election. The truth would have hurt the re-election. Not enough has come out on Benghazi. The report mentions that more oversight is needed.  Let’s hope this report grabs people’s attention. Maybe then the White House will finally have to answer to what happened.

The YRs and CRs Should Unite

by Chris Farmer on April 22nd, 2013 at 12:00 PM
    Posted In: Young Conservatives, YR's

The Young Republican Federation of Virginia Convention has finally adjourned.  It was much ado about nothing.  It is just adorable to see children fight over seats at the kiddie table.  But there was one thing that interested me at the convention and that was the issue of the Young Republicans (YRs) and the College Republicans (CRs) joining up for a dual-membership relationship for those who are eligible.  Unfortunately the idea was shot down in decisive fashion.  This is the wrong call.  The YRs and the CRs should be together.

The thing we must keep in mind here is that the second letter in the abbreviated name is the same; R, which stands for Republicans.  Both groups are made up of Republicans.  There really is no problem preventing the two from having a dual-membership relationship, no real problem at all.

College kids are not always the 18-22 crowd.  Lots of people wait to attend college.  Lots of people take semesters off.  Lots of people go back to college for more degrees.  But if you are already a YR then you can’t join your college’s Republican club unless you relinquish your YR membership.  Why do that to an honest Republican?  A high school kid at 18 can join the YRs, graduate, enroll in college, then he must drop out of the YRs to join the CRs, all in one year.  Weird.  It is my understanding that Virginia is only one of two states that has this silly rule.  Why?

Several arguments were presented at the convention as to why these two groups need to be kept separate.  Two of them are very weak, but the third holds a little bit of water.

The first weak argument presented at the convention was that because the CRs outnumber the YRs in membership the CRs will “takeover” the YRs.  Of course “takeover” was never defined by the paranoid adherents of this thought.  The only power a YR chair has is he gets to pick the location of the monthly meeting and the guest speaker for that meeting.  Wow, that is some real power.  After the president, the Speaker of the House, the Senate Majority Leader,……., the local dogcatcher,……, the head maid at Molly Maid, that is a powerful position.

So with that awesome power came the fear presented in the second weak argument I heard on Saturday; the CRs will choose to have the YR meetings on college campuses where normal YR folk can’t park.  Also, the YRs at Saturday’s convention took the liberty of speaking for the CRs when they attempted to make the point that the under 21 year old CRs don’t want to meet at a bar.  C’mon.  Anyone who believes that has to think that the YRs and the CRs are adversarial organizations who will deliberately work to destroy one another.  Why on Earth would anyone think that?  I do believe that those idiot disciples of Ron and Rand Paul are hell-bent on destroying any and every political organization in America, but I don’t understand the ill-conceived perception that the CRs cannot work with the YRs.  A new YR chair who is a CR and a part of a “takeover” of the YRs who schedules a meeting at 4pm on a college campus would receive a phone call pointing out the obvious; that working stiffs can’t make that time or location.  The chair would then change the time and location to something more suitable and accommodating.  Is there data to suggest otherwise?  None was presented at the convention.  And to the point that CRs would be uncomfortable at a bar I say hogwash.  I know at least one YR who never drinks alcohol, yet somehow and someway the hostess at The Green Turtle in the City of Fairfax allows him to enter the establishment.  I’m guessing that is because The Green Turtle serves iced tea, soda, fruit juice, water, etc.  Sometimes I attend YR meetings and kick back a few beers, other times I don’t have a drop.  There is no pressure to drink and no problem when I stick to water or soda.  So where is the data that CRs would be uncomfortable at The Green Turtle?  None was presented. And why are those paranoid YRs who fear a “takeover” looking out for those who would “takeover” their beloved club?  No reason was given.

The third argument is that the YRs and CRs have their own seats on State Central.  That is an argument that needs some maneuvering to get around.  Earlier I mocked the powerful chairs of YR clubs for having no real power at all, but State Central ain’t the kiddie table.  Real work is done on State Central.  But can’t a conflict here be easily avoided by simply stating that only YRs can vote for their State Central rep. and only CRs can vote for theirs?  No dual-membership CRs would have the chance to “takeover” the YR spot on State Central, so crisis avoided.  That wasn’t difficult.

YR clubs are the best places to find door knockers, no question.  Their membership is as equaling informed and engaging as they are physically fit enough to knock doors. It is physically demanding to stay out there and finish a walkbook.  Campaigns always appreciate the support in canvassing they bring, so who better to show the brand new to this area of campaigns than the YRs?  Republicans helping Republicans, it could be like a Disney film.

So this really all boils down to an adorable little power fight over seats at the kiddie table.  “Takeover” and “can’t park on a college campus”, are you joking?  Let’s argue about something real, such as where and when to meet for door knocking for which campaign.  A united front by young volunteers who could fill a neighborhood like an army invading conquered territory could be the end result of college kids having dual membership in the CRs and YRs.  Instead we are left with another splinter cell competing for candidates’ time and needlessly duplicating engagement which could turn-off would be voters and at worse, push away people from the political process altogether.  Let’s unite, share the message, share our resources and work together to get Republicans elected across the board.

    Terrorism Hits Boston Again

by Taller Than Madison on April 15th, 2013 at 4:30 PM
    Posted In: National politics

Explosions hit Boston. Right now it is being reported that two explosions went off this afternoon at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and another explosion went off near a library.  Reports are continuing to come in about other suspicious packages that are being found at various locations in the city.

While it is way too early to know who is responsible for the attacks today at the Boston Marathon it is clear that this is the work of terrorism. Whether the actors are foreign or domestic tragic attacks like this need to be labeled as terrorism because that is what this is.

This is not the first time Boston was a recent location for terrorism, two of the planes that hit the World Trade Center on September 11th took off from Logan International Airport.

From us here in Northern Virginia and everywhere around the US and across the world our thoughts and prayers are with Boston tonight.

This link takes you to an unbelievable and unedited video at Boston.com of the first explosion.
