This morning’s Richmond Times-Dispatch contains an op-ed that shows the danger the Democrats’ pro-union agenda poses to Virginia. Virginia, with its strong right-to-work laws and business-friendly reputation, has been a favorite spot for companies to locate their operations, or relocate their operations from less-business-friendly states. That reputation, however, is under assault, from national Democrats threatening to impose card check legislation, and from state Democrats. All three Democratic candidates for governor are squarely in the labor camp, and that bodes ill for Virginia’s business climate. From the Times-Dispatch this morning:
Blogger Karen Duncan, who bills herself as “proudly liberal since 2005,” was clearly acting out of gratitude when she posted pictures and descriptions of Democrats Terry McAuliffe, Brian Moran, Creigh Deeds, and Jody Wagner handing out coffee and popcorn — and being generally cheerful and supportive — during a union-sponsored picket line. The event was held on Jan. 19 at the Hilton Crystal City at National Airport.
“They came and remembered their working class roots and their core party values,” Duncan wrote of the three Democratic candidates for governor of Virginia and of Wagner, who is seeking the party’s nomination for lieutenant governor. “They came bearing gifts and sustenance to cold and hungry picketers and one walked the picket line,” she enthused.
People’s Weekly World — which has delivered “working class news and opinions since 1924″– also handed out rave reviews: “In a sign of profound change, three Democratic candidates for Virginia governor walked on the picket line and spoke at a sidewalk rally. Also marching was Jody Wagner.”
Never mind the confusion about how many candidates actually walked the walk. Instead, we will note with some irony that the march on the Hilton came just a couple of weeks before Gov. Tim Kaine announced Hilton Hotels Corp. was moving its headquarters from Beverly Hills to Fairfax. Perhaps the company decided to ignore the earlier assault on its good name.
In the long run, though, businesses will not ignore any decline in Virginia’s reputation as a state that respects workers’ rights by protecting their right to work. Across the river in Washington, Democrats are preparing an assault on secret ballots and American job creation. The times they may be changing in the Old Dominion, but we suspect Democrats are sorely mistaken if they believe Virginians are prepared to let our next governor turn their state into a Southern version of Michigan.
Supporters of the GOP’s candidate for governor, Bob McDonnell, are no doubt delighted to see his opponents lining up for the unions. It might be the first strike in reversing Virginia’s blue streak.
People’s Weekly World — a paper that “enjoy[s] a special relationship with the Communist Party USA“ – sings the praises of the three Democratic candidates for governor?? That’s an endorsement Virginia business can do without.
